The Engwe EP-2 Boost is a road-legal folding fat-tyre e-bike — 250W rear motor with 55 Nm of torque, a proper torque sensor with a dedicated Boost button for hill assistance, Shimano 7-speed transmission, and a removable 48V 13Ah battery good for up to 75 miles of range in eco mode. The 20" × 4.0" fat tyres flatten potholes and gravel paths, the frame folds to roughly 99 × 55 × 75 cm in seconds, and the whole thing is fully legal on UK roads and cycle lanes. FAQ
Is it suitable for UK roads? Yes. As an EAPC it can be ridden on UK roads and cycle lanes — no licence, tax or insurance required. Minimum rider age is 14.
How does the torque sensor work? The bike measures how hard you're pedalling and matches assistance to your effort, rather than just detecting that you're pedalling. The result is much smoother power delivery — closer to a premium e-bike than a cheap one. The Boost button gives you a momentary kick of extra power for steep starts or hills.
How does the assistance work? The motor only provides assistance while you pedal. Power cuts off above 15.5 mph, as required by UK law. You can still pedal faster on the Shimano gears — the motor just stops helping.
What's the real-world range? 75 miles is the manufacturer figure in PAS 1 (lowest assist mode) on flat ground. Mixed riding — using more assist on hills, full assist into headwinds — typically gives 30–50 miles, which is still comfortable for daily commuting and weekend rides.
How does it fold? Latches at the frame and stem release in seconds — fold the frame in half, drop the stem, and you've got a package that fits in a car boot, under a desk, or down the side of a sofa. The fat tyres make it bulkier than a standard folding bike, but lighter to lift than its size suggests.
How long does charging take? About 6.5 hours from empty using the supplied charger. The battery is removable, so you can charge it indoors away from the bike — useful if you store the bike in a shed or hallway.
Is it heavy? 30 kg is on the heavier end for a folding bike but normal for a fat-tyre e-bike. Once you're moving, the assistance makes it feel like a much lighter machine. Lifting it into a car boot or up stairs is a two-handed job.
How is it delivered? Pre-assembled to around 90% — pedals usually need fitting and the handlebars need straightening. Tools are included and most riders are ready to go in 15 minutes.
