Engwe Engine X Electric Bike – 250W 48V 13Ah 20” Fat Tyre
The Engwe Engine X is the off-road folder in the Engwe range — full suspension front and rear, 6061 aluminium frame, 20" × 4.0" fat tyres, and a 250W rear motor with 55 Nm of torque. The dual-suspension setup is what sets this bike apart: a sprung front fork is normal at this price, but a proper rear shock as well is rare — and it makes a real difference on gravel, towpaths and rougher trails. Three-step folding for car boots and hallway storage, Shimano 7-speed for hills, removable 48V 13Ah battery, and fully road-legal in the UK as an EAPC.

FAQ
Is it suitable for UK roads? Yes. As an EAPC it can be ridden on UK roads and cycle lanes — no licence, tax or insurance required. Minimum rider age is 14.
What's the rear suspension actually for? Most folding e-bikes have a sprung front fork only, so the front wheel absorbs bumps but the back of the bike — and you, sat on it — gets the full impact. A rear shock smooths out the back end too. Genuinely useful on gravel, towpaths, kerbs and any ride longer than half an hour. The price step is real but so is the comfort gain.
How does it compare to the EP-2 Boost? Same 250W motor, same battery, same Shimano 7-speed, same range. The Engine X swaps the EP-2's steel frame for 6061 aluminium, and adds a rear shock for full suspension — at the cost of slightly smaller 160 mm brake rotors (vs 180 mm on the EP-2) and roughly 2 kg more weight. Pick the EP-2 Boost for urban/commuter use; pick the Engine X for off-road bias and longer rides.
How does it compare to the EP-2 3.0 Boost? The 3.0 Boost is the urban premium pick — magnesium step-through frame, hydraulic brakes, Bluetooth colour display, faster charger. The Engine X is the off-road pick — aluminium frame and rear suspension. Different riders.
How does the assistance work? The motor only provides assistance while you pedal. Power cuts off above 15.5 mph, as required by UK law. You can still pedal faster on the Shimano gears — the motor just stops helping.
What's the real-world range? 75 miles is the manufacturer figure in PAS mode on flat ground. Mixed riding — using more assist on hills, full assist into headwinds — typically gives 30–50 miles, which is comfortable for daily commuting and weekend rides.
How long does charging take? About 6.5 hours from empty. The battery is removable, so you can charge it indoors away from the bike — useful if you store the bike in a shed or hallway.
How does it fold? Three steps: latches at the frame and stem release, the bike folds in half, and the handlebars drop. About 15 seconds with practice. Fits in most car boots and stands neatly against a wall.
Is it heavy? 31.7 kg is normal for a fat-tyre folding e-bike with full suspension. The aluminium frame keeps it lighter than equivalent steel-framed bikes. Lifting into a car boot is a two-handed job; pedalling it feels light once you're moving.
How is it delivered? Pre-assembled to around 90% — pedals usually need fitting and the handlebars need straightening. Tools are included and most riders are ready to go in 15 minutes.
